A rubber sales center will be launched in 2017 to help rubber farmers and producers get a fair price for their crops, an official from the Ministry of Commerce said.
“Myanmar rubber fetches low price internationally due to its poor quality. In order to improve rubber quality and get a fair price, the rubber sales center will be launched,” said U Win Myint, director of the Trade Promotion Department under the Ministry of Commerce.
“We will post the current price of products online. Farmers from villages will know the right price and they won’t get cheated. If our rubber can improve in quality, we will get good price. We are drawing rules for this centre now,” he added.
“Many things must be done to launch this rubber sales centre. The rules are being drawn. Also, we need to form a board to lead this operation. After that we will need a budget and will have to communicate with banks,” said U Khaing Myint, secretary of Myanmar Rubber Planters and Producers’ Association.
The rubber producers should also focus on getting the best quality of rubber in order to get a good price, he added.
A laboratory to test the quality of rubber has been built and awaiting certification by the International Rubber Organization, which will visit Myanmar soon, according to U Khaing Myint.
