The total trade over land borders for this fiscal year as of December is worth $4.6 billion, with exports beating imports, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
Exports were worth over $2.8 billion and the imports over $1.7 billion.
“In border trade, exports exceeded imports. The opposite is true in maritime trade,” said U Win Myint, a director at the Ministry of Commerce.
In border trade with China, exports hit $2.7 billion and imports $1.2 billion for a total trade value of $3.9 billion.
In border trade with Thailand, exports were worth $152 million and imports $555 million; total trade value is worth $707 million.
In India border trade, the exports were worth $33 million and imports $10 million.
With Bangladesh, exports were worth $7 million and imports $0.4 million.
Myanmar and Laos saw no official border trade.
“The biggest border trade is with China and we mainly export agricultural products. From Thailand, we mostly import commodities. We export agricultural products to India and Bangladesh,” said U Win Myint.
Myanmar has 15 border trade gates with its neighbouring countries.
The main border trade terminals with China are Muse, Lwegel, Kan Pite Tee, Shwe Li and Chin Shwe Haw. With Thailand, most trade passes through Tachileik, Myawaddy, Kawthaung and Myeik border trade gates. With India, goods pass through Tamu and with Bangladesh Sittwe and Maungdaw border trade gates.
