Three companies have submitted tender bids to construct the Yangon New City (Yangon Myo Thit) Project, according to Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development of the Yangon regional government.
“Initially there were fifty companies which bought the tender application forms, but only three companies successfully submitted the application. The tender evaluation committee will handle the rest,” said U Than Myint, minister for national planning and economics of Yangon region.

The Yangon government called for a tender on July 12 to implement the Yangon New City Project. The three successful bidders are Shwe Popa International Construction Co Ltd, Yangon South West Development and Business Capital City Development Ltd.
This is the second time the Yangon New City project has been proposed after a previous iteration was canceled last year due controversies resulting from a lack of transparency.
Even the current round has been criticised for lacking public consultation.
“This tender hasn’t been done according to the law. The Yangon regional government has not presented this project to the regional parliament, they just presented the 2040 Yangon City Master Plan. They are implementing the project that was presented by an MP,” U Kyaw, a member of the parliament from Yangon region parliament, told Myanmar Business Today.
According to the constitution, regional governments have to present projects to the regional parliament before implementation, said U Kyaw.
“An MP cannot present this kind of project, only the relevant regional government has the authority,” he added.
However, U Kyaw Soe, minister for forest and energy of Yangon region, claimed that the project is being implemented according to the law.
