Telenor Myanmar Limited (Telenor) hosted the 21st edition of Net Monday in with a call for more responsible internet usage among customers in Myanmar.
Net Monday is a monthly industry event that brings together local programmers, web designers, bloggers, developers, technical experts, and representatives from local or international internet and technology companies.
“The Internet is one of the most powerful tools for economic and social progress in emerging markets like Myanmar – and Myanmar is going digital in a way that almost no other country has done.
“Today, we estimate that 65 percent of all mobile users are already on a smartphone, and more than 57 percent of our own 12 million customers are data users. This is an extremely rapid rate of adoption, in a society that is stepping into the world of the internet that has developed ahead of us,” said Joslin E Myrthong, chief marketing officer at Telenor Myanmar.
“However in a borderless internet world that ‘never forgets’ and is open to all elements of society, both positive and not-so-positive, there is a need to guide this journey, especially among the younger generation of users. Our ambition should be to create a new generation of digital citizens who are not only extremely savvy about using the internet, but also smart and safe in the way we use it. In short digital citizens that are more resilient to risks, and more responsible in usage of the internet,” Joslin added.
At the event, panellists from Myanmar Blogger Society (MBS), Myanmar Information Development Organization (MIDO) and Telenor raised points on the impact of irresponsible internet behaviour and its society, the dynamics of responsible online communities, awareness of responsible internet, and what the role that the media can play in driving good behaviour.
