More than 100 tonnes of high quality coffee beans from Mandalay region and Shan state will be exported to Japan and other Asian countries, said U Min Hlaing, secretary of Myanmar Coffee Association.
It will be exported at a base price of $3.5 per Kilogram, and only high quality and fresh coffee beans will be exported, U Min Hlaing said.
In order to get foreign money and to improve the income of coffee farmers, Myanmar Coffee Association is working to export coffee to more foreign countries.
Currently, one tonne of coffee beans will get K3 to K3.3 million on the local market, but exporting coffee can mean higher profits.
U Min Hlaing said, “Myanmar coffee beans will be exported mainly to Japan and Korea. They want to buy Myanmar coffee because of its taste, quality and freshness. The Myanmar coffee varieties are high quality and very fresh.”
Coffee plants start producing berries when they are three years old and can produce coffee bean at five-year aged. About 1,000 coffee plants can be planted in one acre of land.
Coffee plants are mainly planted in Pyin Oo Lwin and Mogok in Mandalay region, and Naung Cho and Ywar Ngan in Shan state.
There are about 30,000 acres of coffee plantation in Myanmar. The Myanmar Coffee Association exported 36 tonnes of coffee beans to Japan in 2014.
